Dr. Catherine Yi-yu Cho Woo, an accomplished painter, teacher and feng shui master, as well as the first Asian American woman to serve on the National Council on the Arts, was greeted by a standing room only crowd as she opened a two-week showing of her feng shui-inspired paintings at the United Nations in New York on March 29th. The exhibit was sponsored by the UNSRC Feng Shui Group.
Dr. Woo dedicated her exhibit to "Peace and Tranquility" in honor of the peace-related work being done by United Nations staff members in New York and around the globe.
Her current lecture and exhibition tour opened at two locations in Illinois in March, will stay at the U.N. from March 29th to April 9th, and will end at Princeton University from April 11th to 30th. Her paintings also can be viewed online at www.cathywoo.com
Dr. Woo's paintings have been shown in galleries and museums throughout Asia and the United States. One reviewer described her work by saying, "To stand in front of Dr. Woo's work is to experience the stirrings of the heart, mind, and soul of nature, as if the paintings are alive. Trees and mountains breathe out peace. Splashes of color vibrate with the energy of life and movement. Her visually poetic paintings create a close relationship between the beauty of nature and its beholder."
Dr. Catherine Yi-yu Cho Woo is a master of Feng Shui, the 4,000-year-old Chinese art of designing one's environment to maximize the flow of positive energy (ch'i).
Dr. Woo believes that there is no separation of art, life, and feng shui. Her works therefore embrace and reflect a balance of the five elements in Chinese philosophy — metal, water, wood, fire, and earth.
As a disciple of Mizong Feng Shui, Dr. Woo maintains that the positioning of paintings within a room can have different effects on those who view the paintings. Displays of her works that respect feng shui principles, whether at public galleries or in private homes, have been found to bring a sense of peace and tranquility to visitors.
